How it is calculated
Money at risk = capital × risk %. Risk per share = |entry − stop-loss|. Quantity = money at risk ÷ risk per share, rounded down. If the position value is more than your capital, you would need margin / leverage.
Questions
Why risk a fixed % of capital?
A few losing trades in a row then cannot damage the account badly, and you can keep trading with discipline.
Does it work for a short trade?
Yes — put the stop-loss above your entry. The distance is what counts.
